What is LiveLayer?
LiveLayer is a modern, minimalistic wallpaper manager for Windows. It lets you set videos, GIFs, and images as your desktop wallpaper, add customizable date widgets, and automatically cycle through your collection.
Is LiveLayer really free?
Yes. LiveLayer is completely free with no in-app purchases, no subscriptions, and no hidden paywalls. It is also open source under the AGPL-3.0 license. Download it from the Microsoft Store or GitHub.
Does LiveLayer require Steam?
No. LiveLayer is a standalone app. There is no Steam client, no launcher dependency, and no account required to download wallpapers or use the app.
Does LiveLayer come with built-in wallpapers?
No — by design. LiveLayer ships with zero pre-loaded content so there is no bloatware taking up your storage. Bring your own videos, GIFs, and images, and nothing else.
What wallpaper formats are supported?
Images: JPG, JPEG, PNG, BMP, WEBP, TIFF, and TGA. Videos: MP4, WEBM, AVI, MOV, and MKV. Animated GIFs are supported too.
Will live wallpapers slow down my PC?
LiveLayer is built with Tauri, so the installer is about 5 MB and the app stays light while it runs. Video wallpapers use roughly 200 MB of RAM; images and GIFs use far less. A GPU with hardware video decoding keeps video playback smooth.
Can I use a different wallpaper on each monitor?
Multi-monitor support is on the roadmap. LiveLayer currently runs one wallpaper across your desktop — more displays are coming in a future release.
How do the date widgets work?
Date widgets overlay the date and time on any wallpaper. Choose from six fonts, set the color, scale it from 0.5× to 1.5×, align it anywhere, and toggle 12- or 24-hour time. Drag it wherever you want and lock it in place.
Does LiveLayer work offline?
Yes. LiveLayer works fully offline. Your wallpapers are local files, and no cloud account or internet connection is required.
Which versions of Windows are supported?
LiveLayer supports Windows 10 and Windows 11 on x64 systems. macOS and Linux builds are in the works.
